Author Visits |
Our entire middle school listened with wonder at the adventures shared by Ginger Zee during her visit to our school in Spring 2019. She talked about weather, her new book, and her lessons of life that reached out to all the students. I know it was impactful because there was not a single cell phone in use during the whole presentation! All were engaged by her visit. |
Third Graders at Hilburn were delighted to meet the author, Andy Griffith. He is the author of the hysterically funny series called the The Treehouse Series. Students prepared for his visit by envisioning what amazing rooms would be in their own treehouses. Some had automatic ice cream rooms, bowling alleys, and even self-cleaning rooms. We also constructed our own treehouse in the library! His spring 2017 visit is one we will remember for a long time.

We love authors at Hilburn! The 4th grade students at Hilburn talked about the writing process with author Stephenie Peterson. She visited Hilburn on March 22 to share her newest book, Nellie Nova Takes Flight. She engaged the students in a discussion about how she became an author and what inspires her to write. The students asked all kinds of great questions! Students who purchased her book got it signed by the author. Her book is also available for checkout in the library. |
Penny Warner, author of the The Code Busters Club series, winner of The Agatha Award, came to visit the 3rd grade October 7, 2015. She shared her love of codes and how she uses them in her books. Students received a secret code package and practiced cracking some secret messages. Her books are now flying off the library shelves! A number of students purchased her books and got them signed by the author. A very special day for all!
Many thanks to Quail Ridge Books.

Author Corey Ann Haydu discussed and signed her latest book Rules for Stealing Stars with the 6th graders on October 6, 2015 in the school library. Corey shared her writing process and gave tips on how to deal with writer's block. The students participated in a creative activity to help them ask the "big questions" when beginning to write a story. It was an amazing experience to have a published author visit at Hilburn!

On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015 the first graders experienced an author visit with the author and illustrator Michael Hall. Mr. Hall premiered his new book, Red: A Crayon's Story. What a fun and informative program we shared in our library! Michael read his new book, guided students to make crayons in an interactive, digital presentation, and surprised us with a hilarious visit from Frankencrayon. Our thanks to Barnes & Noble for this wonderful event.

The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science by Sean Connolly
During his visit to the Hilburn library, Mr. Connolly helped us to enter the fascinating world of science. He performed several experiments from his book that enthralled our students. So get a little messy and check out his books, if you dare to try a few experiments of your own.
